Kerry's Greek Island Adventure – A Two-Centre Holiday to Skiathos & Skopelos

If you're dreaming of a Greek island getaway I can’t recommend a two-centre holiday to Skiathos and Skopelos enough.

My husband Gavin and I recently enjoyed this fantastic combination, and it was the perfect mix of relaxation, authentic Greek hospitality and stunning scenery.

Our Stay in Skiathos

We stayed at Myrtia Summer Village in Koukounaries on a self-catering basis. The accommodation is traditionally Greek, spotlessly clean and very comfortable, making it an ideal base for exploring the island. It also has a lovely on-site restaurant, and it's said to have the largest swimming pool on the island!

Getting around Skiathos couldn't have been easier. The local bus service runs from Skiathos Town (Stop 0 at the port) all the way to Stop 26, just beyond Koukounaries. Buses run regularly from early morning until around 1am, and at just €3 each regardless of where you get on or off, it's excellent value. Most visitors either use the bus or hire a small jeep or quad bike to explore the island.

Skiathos Town is absolutely beautiful, with its bustling harbour, boutique shops, traditional tavernas and lively bars.

One of the highlights has to be watching the planes come in to land just metres overhead near the airport, a real must-see experience! The airport itself is small, making arrival and departures quick and easy through passport control.

During our stay we also visited a wonderful local winery tucked away in the hills above Skiathos Town. The views across the island and the harbour were breathtaking, and it was a lovely way to experience another side of Skiathos.

For any Mamma Mia fans, Skiathos is also the perfect base for excursions. There are plenty of boat trips from the harbour, including trips to the famous church featured in the wedding scenes from the film, as well as visits to neighbouring islands.

A Night in Beautiful Skopelos

From Skiathos we caught the ferry to Skopelos, where we stayed for one night at the Amalia Hotel in Skopelos Town.

The hotel couldn't be better located – just a five-minute walk from where the ferry arrives and right in the heart of the town.

Skopelos has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. We spent the evening wandering through the narrow streets before enjoying dinner overlooking the charming marina. There are so many fantastic Greek restaurants and bars along the waterfront, making it the perfect place to sit with a glass of wine and watch the boats come and go.

Although we only stayed one night, we would happily return for longer next time.

Easy Island Hopping

The ferry connections between Skiathos and Skopelos are frequent and very straight forward. You can choose between the larger conventional ferry or the faster ferry service depending on your schedule.

If you have extra time, it's also easy to continue your island-hopping andventure by visiting  Alonnisos or Glossa, the beautiful port area on the opposite side of Skopelos.

Why We Loved It

What made this holiday so special was experiencing two very different islands in one trip. Skiathos offers lively beaches, excellent transport, plenty of excursions and vibrant nightlife, while Skopelos feels quieter, more traditional and wonderfully authentic.

The Greek people were incredibly welcoming wherever we went, and the food was simply outstanding. Every meal seemed to come with a warm smile, beautiful sea views and generous hospitality.

If you're looking for a holiday with crystal-clear waters, authentic Greek culture, fantastic food and easy island hopping, then Skiathos and Skopelos should definitely be on your list.

If you'd like to hear more about our experience or are thinking of booking your own Greek island adventure, pop into the branch and I'd be delighted to help you plan the perfect itinerary.
