Lapland Holidays for All Ages: Why the Magic Never Fades

For many people, Lapland is seen as the ultimate destination for young children. But after experiencing this incredible Arctic adventure as a family, we can confidently say that the magic of Lapland is just as captivating for adults and older children as it is for little ones.

In December 2021, our family of four set off on a day trip to Lapland that would become one of our most treasured travel memories. Travelling together were Mum, Dad, our 21-year-old son Benji, and our 6-year-old son Elliott – the perfect mix of ages to discover whether Lapland really is a destination for everyone.

Flying to Lapland from Newcastle Airport

Our adventure began with a direct flight from Newcastle International Airport to Enontekiö in Finnish Lapland. The flight takes approximately three hours, making it one of the most accessible winter wonderland destinations for families in the North East.

Upon arrival, we were provided with thermal snowsuits, boots, gloves and goggles to ensure we stayed warm and comfortable in the Arctic temperatures. Wrapped up against the crisp winter air, we were ready for the adventure ahead.

An Unforgettable Snowmobile Sleigh Ride

The excitement began immediately.

Instead of boarding a coach, we climbed into a traditional sleigh pulled by a snowmobile and set off through the snowy wilderness. Surrounded by endless forests, sparkling white landscapes and untouched Arctic scenery, the journey felt like something from a film.

It was an exhilarating experience that instantly showed us that Lapland holidays aren't just for children. The thrill of racing through the snow-covered countryside was every bit as exciting for the adults as it was for Elliott.

Traditional Lapland Activities for the Whole Family

Nestled amongst the stunning Lappish countryside, the village offered a fantastic selection of traditional Arctic experiences that could be enjoyed at a relaxed pace.

Throughout the day, we enjoyed:

• Reindeer sleigh rides

• Husky sledding experiences

• Tobogganing and sledging

• Snowmobile adventures

• Exploring the beautiful winter landscapes

One of the things we loved most was the freedom to enjoy the activities without feeling rushed. There was no rigid schedule to follow, allowing everyone to experience Lapland in their own way.

Meeting Santa in His Secret Hideaway

Of course, no Lapland holiday would be complete without meeting Santa Claus.

One of the highlights of the day was a magical sleigh ride through the snowy forest to Santa's secret hideaway. Here, we enjoyed a private family meeting with the big man himself.

We shared our Christmas wishes, received a small gift and captured a treasured family photograph that remains one of our favourite travel memories.

Even our 21-year-old son was swept up in the atmosphere. That's the beauty of Lapland – it has a unique way of bringing out the child in everyone.

Discovering the Arctic Winter Wonderland

Beyond the activities, the scenery itself was unforgettable.

We explored a beautiful snow igloo, admired intricate ice sculptures and simply soaked up the peaceful atmosphere of the Arctic wilderness. Everywhere we looked felt like a Christmas card brought to life.

The combination of snow-covered forests, traditional Lapland experiences and festive magic created memories that will stay with us forever.

Is Lapland Worth Visiting as an Adult?

Absolutely.
